Skin wrinkling, acne scars, sun spots, and sagging are common problems which diminish appearance and self-esteem. At Academic Dermatology in Edina, Dr. Whitney Tope and his team specialize in skin rejuvenation, the modern way to look as good as you feel. Read Restorative Skin Treatmentanswers to frequently asked questions Dr. Tope encounters at his innovative cutaneous surgery and laser center.

Why does my facial skin become wrinkled?

There are two culprits: sun exposure and the aging process. Sun exposure can lead to skin cancer, but beyond that, UV radiation causes areas of hyperpigmentation on the face and other areas of the body. You may know these areas as sun or age spots or freckles.

Regarding the aging process, yes, skin does change over time. The wrinkles, sagging and creepy skin you see when you look in the mirror comes from diminished collagen, the protein which helps youthful skin stay smooth and elastic. Also, older skin tends to be drier and therefore, prone to fine lines and wrinkles.

What can be done about the lines around my eyes, across my forehead and between my nose and mouth?

Your skin rejuvenation doctor in Edina offers BOTOX injectables, a purified type of the botulism toxin. Injected in selected areas of the skin, BOTOX stops excessive muscular movement when you smile, laugh or frown (dynamic wrinkling). Skin becomes smoother and stays that way for 4 to 6 months. BOTOX requires no special preparation or downtime and is suitable for people up to age 65.

Another helpful technique is laser skin resurfacing. This in-office apparatus sends focused beams of light into selected areas of the skin, stimulating collagen production. A versatile procedure, laser skin resurfacing makes big pores, acne scars, sun spots, and fine lines and wrinkles practically unnoticeable.

How do I know I am a candidate for skin rejuvenation?

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons says many people qualify for the cosmetic procedures offered by a board-certified dermatologist such as Dr. Tope. Keys to successful treatment are:

  • Realistic expectations of how you will appear after your procedures (don't expect to look 18 if you are 55)
  • Knowing that facial rejuvenation may involve more than one service to achieve the desired results, including the application of at-home products such as high-quality skin moisturizers or Vitamin A acids
  • Treatment plans which are individualized to patient need and preference
